DNS Configuration for Dial-Up Customers

Settings Icon DNS settings tell your computer how to locate web pages and other resources on the Internet. To properly configure your dialup connection’s DNS settings, follow the steps below for your specific operating system.

Windows 95/98

  1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
  2. A new window will open. Inside, double-click the "Dialup Networking" icon.
  3. In this window, look for an icon which represents your Hubris connection. Right-click this icon and choose "Properties..." from the menu that appears.
  4. A new window will appear showing many different settings for your Hubris Communications dial-up connection. At the top of this window, click the tab labeled "Server Types."
  5. On this page, click the button near the bottom labeled "TCP/IP Settings."
  6. A new window appears. In this window, the following options must be set correctly:
    Server assigned IP address.
    Set this to "server assigned" if you have a dialup or a DSL account. Only Business and Professional DSL accounts have assigned IP addresses.
    Server assigned name server address.
    Set this to "server assigned name server address." If you have any other setting enabled for this option, please disable it by clicking "Server assigned name server addresses."
  7. Click "OK" and close the other open windows.
  8. Click the "Start" menu (in the lower left-hand corner of the screen) and choose "Control Panels."
  9. Choose "Network."
  10. In the Network Control Panel, locate the line labeled "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter." Click that line, then click the "Properties" button.
  11. In the window that appears, click the tab labeled "DNS Configuration."
  12. Click the option labeled "Disable DNS."
  13. Click "OK" and close the other open windows.

Windows ME

  1. Click the "Start" menu.
  2. Choose "Settings."
  3. Choose "Control Panel."
  4. A new window will open. Inside, double-click the "Dialup Networking" icon.
  5. In this window, look for an icon which represents your Hubris connection. Right-click this icon and choose "Properties..." from the menu that appears.
  6. A new window will appear showing many different settings for your Hubris Communications dial-up connection. At the top of this window, click the tab labeled "Networking."
  7. On this page, click the button near the bottom labeled "TCP/IP Settings."
  8. A new window appears. In this window, the following options must be set correctly:
    Server assigned IP address.
    Set this to "server assigned" if you have a dialup or a DSL account. Only Business and Professional DSL accounts have assigned IP addresses.
    Server assigned name server address.
    Set this to "server assigned name server address." If you have any other setting enabled for this option, please disable it by clicking "Server assigned name server addresses."
  9. Click "OK" and close the other open windows.
  10. Click the "Start" menu (in the lower left-hand corner of the screen) and choose "Control Panels."
  11. Choose "Network."
  12. In the Network Control Panel, locate the line labeled "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter." Click that line, then click the "Properties" button.
  13. In the window that appears, click the tab labeled "DNS Configuration."
  14. Click the option labeled "Disable DNS."
  15. Click "OK" and close the other open windows.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP

  1. Open the network connections folder. The instructions differ between Windows 2000 and XP:
    Windows 2000
    1. Click the "Start" menu.
    2. Choose "Settings."
    3. Choose "Network and Dialup Connections." A new window should appear.
    Windows XP
    1. Open "My Computer."
    2. In the left-hand column of the "My Computer" window, click "My Network Places."
    3. A new window appears. In the left-hand column, click "View Network Connections."
  2. Now look for an icon which represents your connection to your Hubris account. Right-click that icon and choose "Properties" from the menu that appears.
  3. A new window appears. At the top, click the tab labeled "Networking."
  4. In the middle of this window, you will see a large white box. Within this box, look for the protocol labeled "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." Click it one time, then hit the button labeled "Properties."
  5. A new window appears. In this window, the following options must be set correctly:
    Obtain an IP address automatically.
    Set this to "Obtain an IP address automatically" if you have a dialup or a DSL account. Only Business and Professional DSL accounts have assigned IP addresses.
    Obtain DNS server address automatically.
    Set this to "Obtain DNS server address automatically." If you have any other setting enabled for this option, please disable it by clicking "Obtain DNS server address automatically."

Macintosh OS 7/8

  1. Click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose "Control Panels."
  3. From the menu or window that appears, choose "TCP/IP."
  4. A new window appears. At the top of the window, set the option labeled "Connect Via" to "PPP."
  5. Set the option labeled "Configure" to "Using PPP Server."
  6. In OS 7 and 8, the DNS numbers and search domains must be specified in the TCP/IP Control Panel. For most of our customers, the correct settings are:
    • Primary: 207.178.96.2
    • Secondary: 207.178.96.3
    • Search Domain: hubris.net
    1. Click inside the large white box labeled "Name Server Addr."
    2. Type the first string of numbers.
    3. Press ENTER on your keyboard.
    4. Type the second string of numbers.
    5. Click inside the box labeled "Search Domains."
    6. Type in your domain. This is the last part of your email address. Do not include the @-symbol or any part before that. Just type the domain name only.
    7. Close the TCP/IP Control Panel. Be sure to select "Yes" when asked to save changes.

Macintosh OS 9

  1. Click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose "Control Panels."
  3. From the menu or window that appears, choose "TCP/IP."
  4. A new window appears. At the top of the window, set the option labeled "Connect Via" to "PPP."
  5. Set the option labeled "Configure" to "Using PPP Server."
  6. In this window, there are also two large white boxes near the bottom. If there is any information in these boxes, delete it. It is important that these boxes be left blank.
  7. Close the TCP/IP Control Panel. Be sure to select "Yes" when asked to save changes.

Macintosh OS X

  1. Click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose "System Preferences...."
  3. In the window that appears, click the "Network" icon.
  4. A new window appears. The "TCP/IP" tab should already be selected. Set the option labeled "Configure" to "Using PPP."
  5. In this window, there are also two large white boxes on the right. If there is any information in these boxes, delete it. It is important that these boxes be left blank.
