The Solution: Editing Dialing Rules

If You Installed the Hubris Communications CD-ROM Software

  1. Double-click the icon on your desktop labeled "Hubris."

  2. The "Connect to Hubris Communications" window will appear. Within this window, click the button labeled "Properties."

  3. The "Location Properties" window will appear:

In this box, you can enter various settings to alter the way the phone number is dialed.

Area Code:

In the box labeled "Area Code," enter your area code.

To Access an Outside Line:

If you need to dial a number to access an outside line, enter that number in the appropriate box, followed by a comma (","). The comma tells the modem to pause before dialing the rest of the phone number.

To Dial a 10-Digit Number

If you need to dial a 10-digit number, type the 3-digit area code in the box for accessing an outside line.

Example: If you live in the Kansas City metropolitan area (but not in Missouri) you need to dial the "816" area code to access the number in Kansas City, MO... even though it may not be a long-distance call for you. Therefore, you should type "816" in the box for accessing an outside line.

To Dial a Long-Distance Number

If you need to dial a long-distance number, key in "1" and the 3-digit area code in the box for access an outside line.

Example: If you live in Louisburg, KS, the closest dialup access number is in Paola. Since Paola is a long-distance call from Louisburg, you need to dial it as such. Therefore, you should type "1913" in the box for accessing an outside line.

REMINDER: It is YOUR responsibility to determine whether a number is a local or long-distance call. Hubris Communications WILL NOT pay long-distance charges under any circumstances.

To Disable Call Waiting

If you have call waiting, you can temporarily disable it during an Internet phone call. Choose the correct code from the list. For most customers, the first choice is the correct code.

NOTE: If you have call waiting, we highly recommend you disable it during an Internet call, because the "beep" which signals an incoming call can cause your Internet connection to unexpectedly terminate.

If You Did Not Install the Hubris Communications CD-ROM Software

All modern computers include software with the capability of dialing into Internet service providers. You can edit the dialing rules using the computer's built-in features. However, instructions for editing the dialing rules vary according the operating system version you have installed. Therefore, specific instructions for editing dialing rules are beyond the scope of this troubleshooting wizard.

If you don't know how to edit the dialing rules on your computer, search the "help" feature within your operating system for instructions. If you are still unable to find the help you need, call our Technical Support department for assistance.
