Mail for OS X (Jaguar)

Mail is the email program that comes with Mac OS X. You can configure it to access your Hubris Communications email account by following these instructions.

Automatic Configuration via AppleScript

You can run this AppleScript file to quickly and easily setup your Hubris Communications email account. After running the script and following the onscreen instructions, no further setup is required.

Manually Setting Up an Account for the First Time

Before you can use Mail to access your email account, you must configure the program with the correct account settings. The easiest way to do this is to program your settings into the “Internet Preferences Panel.” If you have already done this, you can skip these setup instructions and view the other configuration options below.

  1. Open the “Internet Preferences Panel.”
    1. Click the “Apple” menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
    2. Click “System Preferences.”
    3. Click the “Internet” icon.
    4. When the dialog box appears, click the tab labeled “Email.”
  2. Internet Preferences Panel: Email
    Default Email Reader
    Set this option to "Mail."
    Use .Mac Email Account
    This option should be unchecked.
    Email Address
    Enter your full email address in all lowercase letters.
    Incoming Mail Server
    Type your incoming mail server name.
    Account Type
    This option must be set to "POP."
    User Account ID
    Enter the first part of your email address leaving off the @-symbol and everything after it.
    Password
    Enter your password. This is the same password you use to log onto the service.
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Type your outgoing mail server name.
  3. Close the Internet Preferences Panel to save your changes. Now, when you launch Mail, it will be properly configured to access your Hubris Communications email account.

Checking Other Settings and Options within Mail

There are other options and settings you may wish to configure for Mail. Some of those options are explained below.

  1. Launch the “Accounts” window:
    1. Within Mail, click the “Mail” menu at the top of the screen.
    2. Click “Preferences” from that menu.
    3. When the dialog box appears, click the “Accounts” icon.
  2. Mail (Jaguar): Accounts
    • Select your account, then click the button labeled “Edit.”
  3. Mail (Jaguar): Account Information
    Account Type
    This should already be set to "POP."
    Description
    Enter your incoming mail server, or type some other meaningful name for this account.
    Email Address
    Enter your full email address in all lowercase letters.
    Full Name
    Type in your name as you would like it to appear when other people receive email from you. In most cases, you will want to type your first and last name. Alternatively, you may wish to use some other name if the email account will be used by more than one person within a family or organization. Examples are:
    • Smith Family
    • ABC Company
    • Community Church
    • etc...
    Incoming Mail Server
    Enter your incoming mail server name.
    User Name
    Enter the first part of your email address, leaving off the @-symbol and everything after it.
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Click the blue up-and-down arrow:
    • If no server is listed in the popup menu, click "Add..."
    • If a server is listed in the popup menu, choose it, then click the "Options" button.
  4. Mail (Jaguar): SMTP Server Options
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Enter your outgoing mail server name.
    User Name
    Enter the first part of your email address, leaving off the @-symbol and everything after it.
    Password
    Enter your password.
    To get to the next screen, click "OK," then click the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Mail (Jaguar): Advanced

    By default, Mail is configured to leave mail on the server. It deletes messages automatically once they are 10 days old. (This does not delete mail on your own computer, however.) Though this is the default setting, we highly recommend you change the settings to match those shown here.

    Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:
    This option should be checked. In the pop-up menu below it, change the setting to "Right away."
  6. To save your settings, click "OK." This will return you to the "Accounts" window. Click the red sphere in the upper left-hand corner of the "Accounts" window to return the Mail.
